Oftentimes when we’re asked why we profess to believe in God, we may find it a bit difficult. Merely saying that we do, is super easy, but WHY we do, can be a bit challenging. This is especially true if it is something you’ve grown up with, grown up in, been taught to adhere to/believe in, dare I say love. Going even further, it’s even more difficult and probably worrying if when you ask yourself the question of why you believe what you do, you can’t answer it. If you’re an inquisitive person, you may not have this issue but the vast majority of people do.
In fact, there comes a point in every human's life when they begin to question everything they have come to know - or most things. I encourage that, here’s why; when you eventually arrive at your conclusion, you’ll either be more rooted than ever, or completely abandon all the falsehoods you’ve come to believe and love. Whatever way, you’ll be more comfortable in who you are as a person and the values you live by. The truth is, you don’t really need to convince the masses, the only person you really need to convince is yourself.
I am a Christian; a proud one and one confident in my beliefs, but, just like you - I had to ask myself the fundamental question - why. Honestly, there are both internal and external influences as to why but in this series, I’ll detail 5 (of many) reasons why I am still a Christian. Some of you may be questioning your own Christianity or, you may be curious as to whether or not this whole Christian ‘thing’ is worth you looking into.
My last blog entry was on reasons why I am still a Christian. I vowed to give you 5 (of many), so today starts with one. I gave a little introduction to this series which I hope was quite thought-provoking for you, reader. It is essential that you apply your critical thinking skills and question all you know so that your roots and foundation become deeper, stronger and more established.
I won’t go into a great amount of detail (so this post actually comes to an end), but feel free to reach out to me on any of the below.
Anyway, I’ll jump right in and give you the first reason why I’m still a Christian.
Reason number ONE. Personal Experience. I have way too many experiences of when God has come through for me. We tend to look for the “big” things in life and fail to realise that waking up each day is not just a freak of nature, it’s not a given. It is a God-given privilege. Nonetheless, there have been so many instances where I can recall God “showing up” in my life. Many of my *very specific* prayers being answered - ask me offline.
So many personal experiences and I don’t believe in ‘coincidence’, I could never deny God in my life, it would be silly.
TWO. Prophecy. A little word with so much meaning. You can go to fortune tellers, clairvoyants, so-called “wise” men, whatever - nothing has accurately told and will accurately tell the future as does the Bible. I mean, look at this crazy pandemic that we're in, who would've thought?! I could stop writing here, but I’ll continue because I said 5 reasons. If I wasn’t a Christian, regardless of how ‘happy’ I was living my life, I’d still raise an eyebrow at the sheer accuracy of the Bible to predict things before they happened down to the letter and date. This only exists in Christianity. I’ll share more if you’re interested.
Number THREE - Nature and Physiology. I am by no means an ‘outdoorsy’ person - in fact, I spend all my time running from insects. However, I do have a broad appreciation for nature and the intricacies of it. Everything from the largest animal to the tiniest creature has such complex physiology - I mean, can you imagine an ant with a brain? Yet they work in such clever community systems, who could’ve designed that? It just appeared after a sonic boom? Nah, I refuse to believe that you, intelligent reader, would take such an easy way out and believe in a pop - next time you want to create something, try making a popping sound LOL. Furthermore, the human body. Wow. I’m a mum (5 months in!) and I’m amazed by the whole process of pregnancy, how my body houses a whole human being, and how my son is learning so much at his tiny age!
FOUR has to be the hard facts. Oxygen exists. It rains. We have hot weather. Night follows day. These are hard facts. Here’s another one - Jesus was once on earth. I’m no historian or archaeologist but history bears witness to the fact that there was once a man called Jesus who walked this earth, there were once disciples, there were once David’s, Mary’s, John’s, Paul’s, Abraham’s. Yes, there was once a blind man who was healed, a woman who was healed from 12 years of menstruation, a woman at the well, a roman centurion who had a sick servant, a wedding at Cana, a Herod, a Pilate...you get the point. Go to any reputable museum that houses a good amount of History and they will tell you that the Bible and it's content is REAL. Again, hit me up for further info.
FINALLY, one for all your Philosophers out there. Pascal’s Wager *wink*. I was toying with the idea of putting this one first or last, but I thought I’d go out with a bang. Put simply it is; You lose nothing if you believe in God and it turns out He does not exist, but gain everything if you believe and He does exist (trust me!). On the other hand, you lose everything if you choose not to believe and God indeed does exist. It’s a simple argument but a poignant one. Go read up more on it. I choose to believe. My life is so much more fulfilled as a result.
If you’re searching and the above is not enough to make you even a little more curious, then I’ll ask you to do something simple. Ask this simple question; “God, are you there?”. I’ll make it a cast iron guarantee that you will get a response and it will be yes. You’ll lose nothing and gain everything.
Absolutely everything.
